WARSAW — A Warsaw man will serve a three-year sentence locally after stealing a shotgun.
Jason Wayne Rohrer, 40, 1692 E. 200N Lot 13, Warsaw, was charged with theft of a firearm, a level 5 felony.
Rohrer was sentenced in Kosciusko Superior Court Three on Tuesday, April 30.
For firearm theft, Kosciusko Superior Court Three Judge Chad Miner sentenced Rohrer to three years in the Kosciusko County Jail, with 1 1/2 years executed and the remaining time to be served on probation. Miner said he had no objection to Rohrer serving the executed part of his sentence through work release but denied him serving it through community corrections due to his criminal history.
The sentence will be served consecutively to a separate criminal case in Allen County for drug possession.
At sentencing, both Miner and Deputy Prosecutor Jennifer Naue noted Rohrer’s criminal history and discussed how Rohrer stole the firearm to purchase illegal substances.
Defense Attorney Jack Birch said Rohrer had been accepted to Kosciusko County Community Corrections. He said community corrections would be a good tool for Rohrer to use to transition back into society and stay sober.
“I’m tired and more ready to be done with my stupidity now more than ever,” said Rohrer.
On Feb. 3, 2023, a Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office detective responded to a report of Rohrer stealing a shotgun. Rohrer told the gun’s owner that he stole the firearm and traded it in exchange for some drugs.
