Press Release
WARSAW — Edgewood Middle School staff recently announced an initiative that will bring the entire school community together in a unique learning experience.
Inspired by the timeless tale of perseverance and teamwork in “The Boys in the Boat,” written by Daniel James Brown, EMS is launching a comprehensive project-based learning unit that will captivate students and staff alike.
“The Boys in the Boat” is a gripping narrative that tells the story of the University of Washington’s rowing team and their journey to the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Filled with themes of resilience, determination, and camaraderie, this book has inspired millions around the world.
In the school-wide PBL unit, students and staff will delve deep into the themes and lessons of “The Boys in the Boat” through interdisciplinary activities, discussions, and hands-on projects. From history and literature to science and physical education, every subject will be infused with the spirit of teamwork and excellence exemplified by the book’s protagonists.
The highlight of this immersive experience will be a culminating boat race involving all staff and students. Teams will work together to build their own boats, applying the principles of engineering and design they have learned through the unit.
On May 17, EMS will come alive with the sights and sounds of friendly competition and collaborative spirit as participants take to the water to showcase their ingenuity and teamwork. The event will be open to the community from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with the races scheduled to take place from noon to 2 p.m. The boat race will take place at the Warsaw Community High School pool.
“We believe that ‘The Boys in the Boat’ provides a powerful metaphor for the importance of perseverance, teamwork, and resilience, qualities that are essential for success both in and out of the classroom,” said EMS Principal JoElla Hauselman. “Through this project-based learning unit and culminating boat race, we aim to inspire our students to reach for greatness and discover the strength that comes from working together.”
The community is invited to join EMS students and staff for the event. For more information, contact Hauselman at [email protected] or (574) 371-5096.
