WARSAW — Tyler Swartz is interning as a co-op teller at Everwise Credit Union through the Warsaw Area Career Center’s Work-Based Learning program offered by Warsaw Community Schools.
“I plan to attend Valparaiso University and study finance to become a financial adviser,” Swartz said.
He is the son of Kevin and Melanie Swartz.
What are your job responsibilities? “I help members who come in with their banking transactions.”
How has this position been helpful to you? “It has helped me develop better customer service skills.”
What have you learned? “I have learned a lot more about how banks operate and the transactions they provide to their members,” Swartz said.
How is this job preparing you for the future? “It has helped me learn more about finance and has guided me to want to become a financial adviser in the future,” he said.
What do you like about this job? “I like working with all the members and helping them any way that I can.”
What Career Center classes have you taken in your pathway? “Principles of Business Management, Marketing Fundamentals and Strategic Marketing.”
Dhushyantha Mullakandage Don, assistant branch manager, is Swartz’s supervisor during the internship.
What duties does this student perform? “Branch operations, member services including deposits, withdrawals, check negotiating and debit card handling.”
How is this job preparing this student for the future? “We train our team members to develop their communication, customer service and business operations skills. This will also enhance [the] student’s teamwork and problem-solving abilities, which are vital in any career path. Additionally, exposure to financial systems and processes can provide insights into personal finance management, investments and economics principles, which are beneficial for personal and professional growth.”
What do you think of the WACC Work-Based Learning program? “This is a great program that helps students get a good feel about their aspiring career environments before they begin pursuing their dream jobs or professional field.”
Why were you willing to partner with the WACC in this program? “Warsaw Community Schools has been a valuable partner of Everwise Credit Union that has provided a great number of exceptional students through this program. As an organization, we recognize this program’s support to provide opportunities to students to learn and foster the development of their futures. We believe these partnerships also help to get an insight of careers or the professions that they are expecting to follow in the future.”
