LARWILL — Former Wawasee Community School Corporation Superintendent Tom Edington has been approved as interim superintendent of Whitko Community Schools. Edington was approved for the position at a special meeting of the Whitko Community School Board Wednesday, May 22.
Edington officially starts work Wednesday, May 29, in the administrative offices at Whitko Career Academy. He replaces Tim Pivarnik who resigned last week.
Whitko School Board members are Annette Arnold, Georgia Tenney, Scott Werstler, Deb Thomas and Lynn Studebaker.
Edington retired in December 2020 from WCSC after working 45 1/2 years in public education. Prior to coming to WCSC in 2008, he served as superintendent at Richland-Bean Blossom Community School Corporation, Ellettsville. Prior to that he was employed at North Miami Schools a superintendent for nine years, and 10 years in the Huntington County Schools as a principal.
His teaching experience includes seven years at Northern Wells and four years at Yorktown. He has taught children at the elementary, middle and high school levels and worked with teachers and administrators at those levels. He coached football, wrestling and volleyball.
Edington’s doctoral work was completed at Indiana State University. The University of Southern Mississippi provided his educational specialist degree, while he earned a principal certification, master’s degree and bachelor’s degree from Ball State University. He grew up in Bluffton.
Over the years, Edington has volunteered his time to various organizations. Most recently it has included Syracuse-Wawasee Trails as treasurer; St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church as usher and money counter; Syracuse-Wawasee Kiwanis Club, board member and president; board member of Girl Scouts of Northern Indiana/Michiana, recording secretary for Knights of Columbus and serving on the Kosciusko County Community Foundation Scholarship Committee.
Professional organizations have included educational honorary member of Phi Delta Kappa; member of the Northern Indiana Education Service Center and Indiana Dual Credit Advisory Committee; board member of North Central Indiana Special Services Cooperative; president of the Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents; and graduate of Indiana School Executive Leadership Academy and EPIC Program at Butler University.
Edington and his wife Michelle, reside in Syracuse. She is a teacher at West Noble Middle School. Their daughter Grace, an attorney for the Department of Children Services, resides in Fort Wayne with her husband and two daughters. Daughter Rachel, an art teacher, resides in Connecticut with her husband and two daughters. Daughter Jordan is a travel nurse and son Ryan lives in Chicago and works for JP Morgan Bank.
