News Release

SYRACUSE — Summer reading officially kicks off Saturday, June 1, at the Syracuse-Turkey Creek Township Public Library. This year all ages — adults included — can join in the summer reading fun and tally up pages or minutes read for the chance to win grand prizes whether or not they have a library card.

Syracuse Public Library will use the Beanstack app to track reading, courtesy of the Friends of the Syracuse Public Library. The app is available for free download from the Apple Store or Google Play Store. Once downloaded, families can set up an account and join the Syracuse Public Library’s community before tracking reading and program attendance. Parents can manage all their own logs and their children’s from one account.

The teens in grades sixth through 12th will kick off summer reading with a glow party from 2-3 p.m. Monday, June 3, in the downstairs meeting room. There will be glow dancing, with “Dance Dance Revolution” and “Just Dance.” The library will also set up a taco bar, snacks and drinks. Amongst the festivities, teens can sign up for summer programs and learn more about summer reading.

All ages are invited to join the big summer reading kickoff with Hedgehog Hannah at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 5, in Community Roots behind the library. Hedgehog Hannah will bring a variety of animals for the day, and families can learn more about summer reading and get help to sign up.

Teen Programs

Teens can join the creativity club from 2-3 p.m. Tuesday, June 4, in the Rosalyn Jones Room, and create unique summer bucket list collage coasters. These coasters will feature all the adventurers you want to have this summer.

Then from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, June 6, in the Rosalyn Jones Room, teens can return for young adult video gaming. Teens will play games using the library’s Nintendo Switch while enjoying snacks.

Children’s Programs

Children, ages 8-12, can register for the Mexico program at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 6, in the downstairs meeting room. Tweens will learn about Mexico with special guest Esmerelda Martinez with Lala’s Pinata Boutique and create a pinata. Space is limited, so register at tinyurl.com/SPLpinata.

Ages 6 and older are invited to Globe-trotting Fridays at 2 p.m. June 7. During this program, children will learn about Canada and beaver dams. There will also be maple candy to sample.

Adult Book Club’s June Pick

Adults can pick up June’s book club pick — “The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini — at the Syracuse Public Library. “The Kite Runner” transports readers to Afghanistan at a tense and crucial moment of change and destruction, telling the story of the unlikely friendship between a wealthy boy and the son of his father’s servant. The in-person discussion will occur at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 27, with the Zoom discussion following at 6 p.m. Digital copies may also be available through the Libby app.
