SHIPSHEWANA — The Shipshewana Flea Market will be opening its Weekend Market on Friday and Saturday, June 14-15. The family-themed event is one of only two weekends each year when the flea market opens its gates for weekend visitors, offering a unique shopping experience featuring food, nearly 700 full-season vendors and additional weekend-only vendors.

Door prizes will be given away each hour. “Shippy the Prospector” will be available for photo opportunities at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Friday and Saturday; you can also mine for your own gems at the mining sluice. There will also be the chance to win “Treasure Bucks,” which are wooden coins worth $5 that will be hidden in some gemstone mining bags as special “kids only” door prize drawings.

An array of food vendors will be on hand, offering treats and foods for every taste, from traditional Amish baked goods like whoopie pies to international flavors like pierogies.

Among the hundreds of vendors on 40 acres, shoppers can expect to find everything from handmade crafts and antiques to fresh produce and boutique clothing.

“Our vendors are the heart and soul of the Shipshewana Flea Market. They bring an incredible variety of goods and a unique energy that makes each visit special,” said Michael Christner, flea market director. “We are thrilled to welcome everyone to our Weekend Market and provide a fantastic shopping experience for all.”

The Shipshewana Flea Market has been a tradition for 75 years. Open every Tuesday and Wednesday from May through September, it offers a weekday selling opportunity for vendors who typically travel to weekend markets.

“The weekend openings are a wonderful opportunity for families to experience the charm of Shipshewana,” said Lora Gates, marketing director. “With special attractions like Shippy the Prospector, hourly door prizes and an amazing array of food and vendors, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Plus with all of the great culture, entertainment and things Shipshewana has to do in the area, visitors have so much to choose from, they may want to stay a night or two to take it all in.”

The flea market is now open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays, May through September, rain or shine with holiday hours on Independence Day and Labor Day. The market is also opening for its special weekend hours June 14-15 and Aug. 2-3.
