CHURUBUSCO — A Churubusco woman was arrested after a young child was found unsupervised in a roadway.
Brittany Nicole Lawson, 24, 234 Greenwood Drive, Churubusco, is charged with neglect of a dependent, a level 6 felony; and possession of paraphernalia, a class C misdemeanor.
On June 1, a Churubusco Police officer responded to a report of a small child in a roadway by themselves. Upon arrival, the officer spoke with a group of adults who said they were walking when a young child left a residence and started following them.
According to court documents, when the group took the child back to the residence they came from, they knocked on the residence’s front door and received no answer. The officer went to the residence and announced himself as a police officer, but did not receive a response. A second young child was in the home at the time.
When the officer entered the home, he saw a woman, later identified as Lawson, curled up in a bedroom. A Department of Child Services representative was asked to respond to the scene. During a conversation with DCS, Lawson allegedly said she was a drug user and that she was taking a nap with the children.
In the home, the officer found drug paraphernalia. DCS took custody of the two children.
Lawson was booked in the Whitley County Jail on June 1.
