CARMEL — The board of trustees at Carmel Clay Schools voted to keep “All Boys Aren’t Blue,” a memoir by George M. Johnson, in school libraries.
Cindy Black requested to have it removed because of depictions of incest and sexual abuse.
Others argued the book did not meet the obscenity criteria and instead could help young readers recognize sexual abuse, 30% or 40% of which was cited to be perpetrated by family, making it difficult for victims to identify.
During the public comment portion, 12 people spoke. Nine speakers were in favor of allowing the book to remain in the school library.
In a close vote of 3-2, the trustees voted to keep the book in the library.
The book is not part of the curriculum.
