SOUTH BEND — Protesters gathered outside the St. Joseph county council on Tuesday, June 11, to protest potential negative ecological impacts of a 25-acre solar farm being built in North Liberty, near Potato Creek State Park.
At the council meeting, the council discussed a proposed ordinance that could affect the planned solar farm.
Council member Dan Schaetzle says the proposed ordinance would provide several requirements for solar farms that will make it more difficult and inconvenient for solar companies to build in the county. Schaetzle says he hopes this will discourage solar farms and cover a variety of other concerns.
The proposal was assigned to the Land Use Planning Committee. The committee will review the proposed ordinance and then address the council.
There was no opportunity for public comment during the meeting.
The Area Plan Commission will meet Tuesday, June 18, where there will be an opportunity for public comment.
