WARSAW — A Columbia City man will serve 20 years in prison for dealing over 50 grams of methamphetamine to an undercover officer.
Todd Henry Shumaker, 39, Columbia City, is charged with dealing methamphetamine, a level 2 felony; unlawful carrying of a handgun with a prior conviction, a level 5 felony; and theft, a level 6 felony. Four additional criminal charges and a separate drug possession case were all dismissed as part of a plea agreement.
Shumaker was sentenced in Kosciusko Circuit Court on Monday, June 17.
For dealing meth, Kosciusko Circuit Court Judge Michael Reed sentenced Shumaker to 22 years in the Indiana Department of Correction, with the last two years suspended on formal probation. This sentence will be served at the same time as a drug dealing case from Whitley County.
Shumaker also received two-year DOC sentences for each of his remaining charges, which will both be served at the same time and were suspended entirely on probation. These charges will be served back-to-back to Shumaker’s drug dealing sentence in Kosciusko County.
Shumaker has 370 days of jail time credit and must pay $1,000 in restitution to the NET 43 Drug Task Force.
In total, Shumaker received a 24-year prison sentence, with 20 years executed and four years suspended on formal probation.
At sentencing, Prosecutor Brad Voelz said Shumaker has a significant criminal history, which includes gun violence and drug use. He noted the history justifies Shumaker’s lengthy prison sentence.
“Going through addiction has cost me an extensive part of my life,” said Shumaker.
Sometime in March 2023, NET 43 made a controlled purchase of 56.6 grams of meth from Shumaker.
On April 14, 2023, the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office received a report about a burglary and theft occurring at a Pierceton residence. Among the stolen property were numerous firearms valued over $30,000.
On Sept. 15, 2023, a KCSO detective spoke with Shumaker at the Whitley County Jail regarding the theft. According to court documents, during the interview, Shumaker provided the detective with information on locating stolen firearms. He said he sold two stolen guns to a woman for $1,500.
Later that day, the detective spoke with the woman, who said Shumaker approached her in the spring of 2023 about selling guns to her. When the woman asked Shumaker if the guns were stolen, Shumaker stated they were not. The woman said she agreed to purchase three firearms for $4,000. Law enforcement verified the firearms were stolen during the burglary at the Pierceton residence.
Shumaker has prior convictions for meth possession, paraphernalia possession, burglary, and theft in Kosciusko County.
