ELKHART — Elkhart Civic Theatre kicks off its 64th year in the Bristol Opera House with the perennial Broadway favorite “Fiddler on the Roof.” The six-show season features a little something for everyone with classic and not-so-classic shows and musicals.
The mainstage shows are described as follows:
Fiddler on the Roof — July 26, 27/Aug. 2, 3, 4
Winner of nine Tony Awards, “Fiddler on the Roof” has touched audiences worldwide with its humor, warmth and honesty. In the small village of Anatevka, a poor milkman named Tevye wants to instill his traditional values in his five daughters as they face changing and challenging times in Czarist Russia. “Fiddler on the Roof’s” universal theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality and religion, leaving audiences crying tears of laughter, joy and sadness. Musical, rated G.
Prescription: Murder — Sept. 13, 14, 20, 21, 22
The theatrical origin story for the TV series “Columbo,” “Prescription: Murder” centers on a brilliant psychiatrist and his mistress, who conspire to murder his neurotic, possessive wife. Their plan and their perfect alibi depend on a bizarre impersonation. Lt. Columbo must engage the psychiatrist in a duel of wits until the doctor succeeds in getting him removed from the case. However, it’s the mistress who proves to be the weak link that leads to a trap and a surprising climax. Drama, rated PG.
Urinetown, the Musical — Nov. 15, 16, 22, 23, 24
Tony Award-winner “Urinetown” is a hilarious musical satire of just about everything — including musical theatre itself. In a Gotham-like city, a water crisis caused by a 20-year drought has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. Citizens must use public facilities regulated by one cruel company that profits by charging them for that privilege. But a hero who’s had enough arises and plans a revolution. Musical, rated PG.
Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors — Feb. 21, 22, 28 / March 1, 2, 2025
Bram Stoker’s legendary vampire tale is reimagined and infused with comedic genius and rapier wit rivaling Mel Brooks and Monty Python. In this lightning-fast, laugh-out-loud romp, Mina Westfeldt falls ill with a mysterious blood disease. Sister Lucy and her fiancé, Jonathan Harker, enlist the help of famed vampire hunter Dr. Jean Van Helsing. Teeming with quick-change antics and clever wordplay, this hunt for the dangerous and alluring Count Dracula is a wickedly hilarious ride. Comedy, rated PG-13.
The Marvelous Wonderettes — April 4, 5, 11, 12, 13, 2025
At their 1958 high school prom, Betty Jean, Cindy Lou, Missy and Suzy all have dreams as big as their bouffants. Through hit songs from the ‘50s and ‘60s, they reveal their lives, loves and personalities. Ten years later, they return to perform at their class reunion, and they learn that whatever challenges they have faced – or will face – they will triumph together. A smash Off-Broadway hit, “The Marvelous Wonderettes” is a must-see musical trip down memory lane. Musical, rated G.
12 Angry Jurors — May 9, 10, 16, 17, 18, 2025
Original title: Twelve Angry Men
A 19-year-old man is on trial for murdering his father. It’s a seemingly open-and-shut case — until one juror begins opening the others’ eyes to the facts. “We have nothing to gain or lose by our verdict,” says the juror. “We should not make it a personal thing.” And yet, it does become personal. Tempers grow short, tension mounts and the room becomes a hotbed of anger. The final verdict — and how they reach it — reveals the complexity of human nature and the tenacity of truth. Drama, rated PG-13.
