CLAYPOOL — The Claypool Town Council approved the demolition of a house at 207 S. Clay St. during a June 18 council meeting.

Jerry Creekmore, the property’s owner, presented a sketch of his plans to the council. Creekmore said he’d like to tear down the residence as soon as he receives approval from county officials. Currently, Creekmore’s goal is to build on the property in spring 2025.

Council President Benny Stage Jr. said he had no issues with the work and Council Member Don Miller said he was unopposed to the project. Creekmore said he had not applied for any variances with county government yet because he wanted to get the council’s approval first.

At this point in time, an existing shed at the property will stay there for storage purposes.

In other business, Stage said he and Town Marshal Paul Mullins spoke with Cottage Watchman Security Systems’ staff regarding new cameras for the town. The town received a $5,800 quote from the company for five cameras. Council tabled the matter for now to research funding for the project.

Mullins also presented information on digitized speed limit signs, following discussions from the council’s May meeting about motorists speeding on Clay Street. He said each sign would cost anywhere from $2,500 to $3,000. Council tabled any further decision to look into funding.

Letters to owners of properties in need of mowing will also be delivered this week, according to Mullins.

In an update to the community, council said Town Attorney Andrew Grossnickle is continuing to work on documents for the town’s leash and trash ordinances. During the May meeting, council discussed concerns with unleashed dogs off their owner’s property and overflowing trash bins being left next to the roadway all week long.

Council’s next meeting is at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, at the Claypool Lions Club building.
