WARSAW — A Mentone woman will serve a four-year sentence locally after being sentenced on two drug possession cases.
Amy Jo Mullins, 37, 4961 S. Mallard Road, Mentone, was charged with two counts of possession of methamphetamine, both level 5 felonies. Eight additional criminal charges were all dismissed as part of a plea agreement.
Mullins was sentenced in Kosciusko Circuit Court on Monday, June 17.
For each meth possession charge, Kosciusko Circuit Court Judge Michael Reed sentenced Mullins to two years in the Kosciusko County Jail. Both charges will be served back-to-back. Reed showed no objection to Mullins serving the first year of her executed sentence in the Kosciusko County Work Release Program and the second year in either work release or community corrections. The remaining two years were suspended on formal probation.
In total, Mullins received a four-year sentence, with two years executed and two years suspended on probation.
At sentencing, Prosecutor Brad Voelz expressed concern with Mullins continuing to use meth. It was noted that three children were removed from Mullins’ care in March, with the removal being described as an “eye-opener” for Mullins.
Defense Attorney Nick Jacobs said Mullins has an “obvious substance abuse problem” and is gainfully employed.
“People can help you, but you have to want it,” said Reed to Mullins. “I’m going to give you a chance, but that’s what this is. A chance.”
On Oct. 22, 2022, a Mentone Police officer pulled over a speeding vehicle on SR 25 and identified Mullins as the driver. The officer smelled marijuana inside the vehicle. Upon searching the vehicle, the officer found marijuana and 3.8 grams of meth.
On Feb. 1, 2023, a Mentone Police officer saw a red GMC Yukon with registration plates belonging to a different vehicle. The officer pulled the vehicle over and identified its driver as Mullins.
According to court documents, the officer found less than one gram of meth in the vehicle.
Mullins was previously convicted of dealing in a controlled substance in Fulton County in April 2011.
