MENTONE — The new owners of the Mentone B&K “want to give good food at good prices to good people,” said Gretchen Powell.
Powell co-owns the restaurant, at 9396 W. SR 25, with her husband Scott Powell and father Leonard Goble, all of Warsaw. The Mentone Chamber of Commerce celebrated the new ownership with a ribbon-cutting on Saturday, June 22.
That was the date of its official opening, with the Powells and Goble having a soft opening for a few days earlier after which they “ran out of everything,” said Goble.
He said he and the Powells had initially considered buying the Silver Lake B&K, but opted to ultimately purchase the Mentone one.
Goble said the menu was tweaked “a little bit” from before.
People may order hamburgers, hot dogs, tenderloins, fish, chicken, fries, onion rings, mozzarella sticks and various drinks among other things. There’s also ice cream, including sundaes, milkshakes and floats.
Goble said he and the Powells “lowered the prices for some of it, and some of it has stayed the same because it was kind of reasonable.”
They are assisted by three part-time employees.
Mentone Chamber President Rita Price Simpson said she was happy the business went to new owners so soon after former owner Tammy Anderson stepped away from it.
“The big problem with the small towns so many times is businesses close and they never reopen,” said Price Simpson. “One of the blessings we have in Mentone is people don’t stay closed long, and that’s a real blessing when you have a town of 1,000 people or less, so to have this reopen again is an asset to the community.”
“The people that bought it are super nice people, and I really hope everybody will make sure they patronize this business,” she added.
The B&K is open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and noon to 6 p.m. Sundays for drive-in or dining at several tables. Goble said plans are to hopefully open the drive-through section in the fall and perhaps operate the B&K year-round.
