NEW PARIS — A Nappanee man was arrested following a serious vehicle accident resulting in the amputation of a New Paris man’s arm.

Jordan Larry Graber, 28, 802 S. Elm St. Apartment 3, Nappanee, is charged with causing serious bodily injury when operating a vehicle with a controlled substance in the body, a level 5 felony.

Around 4:30 a.m. Sept. 7, 2023, Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of CR 17 and CR 42, northwest of New Paris.

Douglas Kirkdorffer, New Paris, was traveling north on CR 17 in a 2015 Chevrolet Traverse. Graber was driving a dark-colored 2015 Subaru Impreza east on CR 42 when he failed to stop at a stop sign and hit Kirkdorffer’s vehicle.

According to court documents, upon arrival at the scene, officers saw Kirkdorffer was missing his entire right arm and applied a tourniquet. Kirkdorffer was taken to Goshen Hospital for initial medical treatment and was later transported to Indianapolis.

Graber completed three field sobriety tests and passed all three. A blood test showed Graber had THC in his system.

Graber told police he normally did not travel on CR 42 and was unaware it was a T-intersection.

Graber has already been arrested and released on bond.
